Identity Hackathon for Financial Inclusion
For over six years, AngelHack has been on a mission to build a community of developers, designers and entrepreneurs around the world. Their programs have supported over 150,000 developers worldwide, inviting them to be involved with projects ranging from social impact to enterprise solutions.
A standout program in their roster is the Global Hackathon Series, an annual world tour spanning six continents that brings talented coders and inspired change-makers together to solve real-world problems. From July 28 to 29, the Hackathon will take place in San Francisco, a globally-renown technology hub.
To show our support for AngelHack’s mission, Trulioo will be sponsoring the SF Hackathon and posing a challenge to the community, offering a $1,500 prize to the winning team.
What is Trulioo’s Challenge?
Over the course of the weekend, we ask challengers to be thoughtful of the billions who are financially underserved and build a solution utilizing our identity verification API, GlobalGateway.
Build an application that leverages Trulioo’s API to verify the identities of citizens worldwide in an effort to help underserved individuals gain access to basic financial services. Full details on how to work with GlobalGateway can be found here.
Powering Financial Inclusion with Digital Identity
There are at least 1.5 billion people worldwide who do not possess an official identity document (e.g. birth certificate, passport, proof of residence via utility bill). According to a World Bank survey, around 18 percent of financially excluded adults are unable to access financial services because they lack the documents required to prove their identity during what is known as a Know Your Customer (KYC) check. This check must be performed by all financial services providers when creating an account for a new customer.
Luckily, digital identity can help bridge the gap for the financially excluded. Of the 2 billion unbanked people without access to a traditional bank, 1 billion have cell phones, which means they now have a digital footprint that can help establish an identity – albeit digital.
One of Trulioo’s core missions is to provide verifiable identities for underserved groups to help them gain access to basic financial services. As the leading global identity verification provider, our team is dedicated to providing the technology and data needed to enable access for all for a globally inclusive economy.
Do you have an idea that could give billions access to financial services?
