Trulioo Kicks up its Heels to Raise Money for Local Charity
Our makeup was on fleek, our costumes were brighter than ever and our dance moves were on fire when the Trulioo team took center stage at the Imperial Theatre in downtown, Vancouver to floss our skills at the Tech’s Got Talent lip sync competition!
A fundraising event for local charities, Tech’s Got Talent was held Thursday, June 1, and saw 14 of Vancouver’s largest tech companies go head-to-head in potentially the most epic lip sync battle of 2017. The participating tech companies collectively raised over $30,000 for local charities.
“Two years ago I attended Tech’s Got Talent and I thought it was just amazing,” said Angela Wingenbach, Trulioo’s graphic designer. “Not only was it so much fun, but it’s also for a good cause, so I knew it was something that our team would love to be a part of.”
Performer and Trulioo’s resident dance enthusiast, Bond Lai, said the 10 performers spent approximately 15 hours rehearsing to make sure they were ready for the big night and steal the show with a pop music medley featuring hits from Bruno Mars, Beyonce and Ed Sheeran.
“Our first song choice was Single Ladies, because who doesn’t love a little bit of Queen Bey, then we decided to spice things up and include Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, which we paired with a traditional Indian bhangra dance. Uptown Funk was our third and final song simply because it’s so popular and we knew that it would bring the heat!”
Competition was fierce and while Trulioo didn’t place, we had endless amounts of fun and – more importantly – raised nearly $2,000 for our charity, Backpack Buddies. An initiative by Community First Foundation, Backpack Buddies helps to feed children in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) neighborhood. Currently, the foundation provides more than 300 meals on a bi-weekly basis – from breakfast, lunch, and dinner to snacks such as yogurt, cheese and fresh fruit.
“It was a fantastic experience,” said Lai. “Especially since over a dozen people recently joined our team, so it was a great way for our teams to have fun, make a difference in our community, and get to know each other.”
Local celebrity judges, Kendall Gender (winner of Vancouver’s Next Drag Superstar 2017), Jay DeMerit (former Whitecaps FC captain) and Kaitlyn Bristowe (former Bachelorette and The Bachelor contestant) crowned ACL the winners on the night. A Thinking Ape placed second with their Wayne’s World Rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody and Stellar Recruitment channeled their inner S Club 7 and claimed third place.
Trulioo would like to thank the organizers of Tech’s Got Talent – Plenty of Fish and ACL Careers – as well as everyone who participated, we can’t wait to get practicing for next year!
