The future of digital identity — innovations, trends and opportunities

Future of digital identity

Identity in tribal days was simple; everyone in your group knew who you were. As social systems expanded, paper records and documentation systems were established so identity could function on national and even international levels. Now that the world is increasingly online and mobile, the future of digital identity will deliver new frameworks for commerce, interaction and social identification.

As McLuhan famously stated, “the medium is the message.” Technology is an extension or ourselves, and the importance of a technology is “the change in inter-personal dynamics that the innovation brings with it.” We can now interact with someone just as easily across the planet as across the street. However, can we trust at the same level or have the same control and permissions over our global interactions as our local ones?

Who controls our digital identity? Who profits from it? How do businesses better serve individuals with the seamless experiences, personalization and services they desire without risking personally identifiable information (PII) or coming across as creepy?

Finding the balance between commerce and privacy, between personal enablement and simplified management, creating trust without undue risk is one of the most important determining factors in how the digital revolution will truly play out.
